Envision Zimbabwe works with the community of Hurungwe District Ward 15 engaging in comprehensive discussions on conflict transformation, women’s rights, and climate change, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to address these critical issues in their communities. These engagements have been made possible with the support from Peace Direct, highlighting commitment to building community resilience and promoting sustainable development in this era of climate change.
The Hurungwe District is highly susceptible to climate change, which worsens existing social, economic, and political challenges. This vulnerability leads to environmental degradation, resource scarcity, and increased conflict risk, undermining peacebuilding efforts. Climate-related issues like reduced crop yields, livestock losses, and water scarcity have resulted in food insecurity, malnutrition, and increased household stress, particularly affecting women and girls. The situation has also led to increased domestic violence, gender-based violence, and exploitation. Community engagement has provided a deeper understanding of its far-reaching impacts on peace and security in their communities.
The training with the community emphasized the importance of integrating climate change into conflict transformation and women’s rights initiatives, recognizing that climate change can exacerbate conflicts and gender inequalities. In addition, women’s empowerment is crucial for effective climate action and peacebuilding. More so, integrating climate change into conflict transformation initiatives can help build resilience and promote sustainable peace. By understanding the nexus, the Hurungwe District Ward 15 community has developed more effective strategies to address the impacts of climate change, promote conflict resolution, and advance women’s rights to be implemented in their villages and traditional courts.
The community has enhanced their understanding of mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change, pledging to employ strategies in their villages that include establishing community gardens, organizing community climate change awareness campaigns to educate villagers on adaptation and mitigation strategies and promoting the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar power, cooking with gas to reduce dependence on firewood and charcoal.
